Treatments That Work

Evidence Based and Experience Driven

The study of human behavior originated in 1879 with the founding of the first psychological laboratory. Since then, thousands of research articles have been published explaining that all therapy works through any combination of 4 mechanisms: building flexibility into unhelpful world views; reprocessing painful memories; providing restorative experiences; or changing patterns of behavior. The Axiom approach centers on collaborating with people and helping them decide which treatment works for them. Axiom differs from other therapy providers by focusing on the root of emotional distress instead of simply discussing the events of the week. With Axiom, individuals learn who they are, why they do things, and methods to optimize the course of their life. Even a lifetime of nightmares, jumpiness, and avoidance can be healed with the right treatment.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Trauma, both major and minor, disrupts the brains ability to process memories, leaving those memories to remain at the forefront of our thoughts. EMDR stimulates both sides of the brain to process traumatic memories the same as non-traumatic memories. After treatment, the trauma stops resurfacing whenever the brain is idle.

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)……………..

In nearly every lasting trauma response, the brain formulates some version of the thought “If X happened differently [or if I acted differently], the trauma could have been avoided.” That thought upholds trauma. In CPT, providers work with individuals to explore such patterns of thinking to help the brain move forward.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)…………………..

The brain naturally connects places with events. In PE, individuals work with providers to build a plan to disconnect a location from trauma responses by remaining in a related location until the bodily sensations naturally fade. The body re-learns to experience the feeling of safety when confronted with a reminder of a trauma.
